Twizel New Zealand travel and tourism information for Twizel and Aoraki Mount Cook. Twizel NZ is an alpine village situated in the Mackenzie District in the South Island of New Zealand. Twizel is the closest town to Mount Cook and the Tasman Glacier and setting for many scenes from Lord of the Rings and many other movies. Twizel is a fly fishing paradise with its many lakes and rivers brimming with world record trout and salmon.
Access to the park is via Birchwood Road which leaves SH 8 about 17 km west of Omarama township. Birchwood Road runs for 21 km up to the park boundary, after which it is 4WD only for a further 10 km to the road end. River valleys and wetlands in the park are outstanding habitat for many species including the endangered black stilt/kaki, black-fronted tern/tarapirohe, and wrybill/ngutu-pare.

Twizel golfers play along tree lined fairways where once neither grass or trees existed. The Twizel 9 hole layup is set up for an 18 hole card over 5,345 metresPlayers welcome. Turn from State Highway 8 at Twizel Township signs and follow signs to golf course.

The Twizel Hard Labour Weekend had its background back in 1985 when a half marathon was started as a fundraiser for kids sport. It has morphed through a number of different events at different sites to what we have today - three events (mountain bike, kayak and off-road run) over two days. Competitors can enter individual events or for the really keen, complete all three events and become a Hard Labourer.

The Twizel hunting blocks are well known for their thar hunting potential. Chamois, wallabies, pigs and red deer are also found in the area. The terrain ranges from steep rock and scree slopes, glaciers, braided rivers, beech forest and open tussock country with over 220,000 hectares of public conservation land.

Guided Kaki/Black Stilt Tour - Black stilts are the rarest wading bird in the world. Tours at 9.30am and 4.30pm daily.

Walking - There is a wide variety of walking trails, including the ‘round the town’ loop. Ask for suggested routes at Twizel In-formation Centre.

Mini golf: - The Musterer’s Hut Café, Ruataniwha Road, Twizel.

Tennis - Local tennis courts located behind Twizel swimming pool. Free of charge. BYO rackets and balls.

Squash - There are two squash courts in the Twizel Events Centre. Book and pay at Twizel Information Centre. BYO rackets and ball.

Twizel New Zealand is approximately 500 meters above sea level. Twizel is surrounded by mountain ranges and has a very distinct climate. Twizel NZ is accessible from Christchurch through Burke's Pass, from Queenstown through the Lindis Pass and from the East Coast through the Waitaki Valley. Take a scenic flight from Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook with views over the Southern Alps. Mountain climbing is a major attraction here, with the challenge of Mt Cook. Many ski options are available, including heli-skiing and ski touring.
